Travel Tip: 3 Essential Considerations When Losing Your Passport Abroad
This is the most dreadful situation for any traveler, especially when abroad. Losing your passport poses significant risks as your identity cannot be verified, and it can be exploited for illegal activities.
Regarding procedures:
In case of loss, promptly inform the local police and the nearest Vietnamese diplomatic representation.
- Fill out the passport loss report form with complete information following the passport template and send an email to the Consular Department (at [email protected]) and the Vietnamese Diplomatic Representation where you are currently present, along with 2 photos sized 4×6 cm. Submit along with a copy of the police confirmation of passport loss.
- Be present at the diplomatic representation office for processing.
The information you provide in the passport loss report form will be entered into the database of the Immigration Management Department (Ministry of Public Security) and notify the cancellation of the passport's validity to most countries worldwide. Once the lost passport has been reported canceled, it cannot be restored in value, and you cannot reuse it if you find it. You need to apply for a new passport.

The time for the Vietnamese diplomatic representation office to consider reissuing passports or travel permits:
- If you have other documents proving Vietnamese nationality such as identity card, evidence of legal entry into the host country (airplane ticket, entry declaration) within 5 working days, you will be issued a new passport if you continue your journey to another country; if you return to Vietnam, you will be issued a Travel Permit.
- If you are traveling in a tour group, official delegation, or accompanying a group, present your personal passport, confirm you are a member of the group, and you will be issued a Travel Permit back to Vietnam within 24 hours.
- If you have no other documents and do not fall into the mentioned categories, the Vietnamese Diplomatic Representation must conduct verification. Within a maximum of 5 working days, your passport reissuance or Travel Permit will be considered.
Regarding finances:
Many passport loss incidents also involve losing wallets containing money. Or due to the extended time required to replace the passport exceeding the financial provision, not to mention the passport replacement fees. Therefore, financial matters become a major concern.
If traveling with friends or have relatives in the host country, you may rely on them for financial assistance to replace the passport... However, if you are traveling alone, you need to take the initiative by either visiting a bank or using international money transfer services.
You have two options: you can use Western Union for home delivery service. Or if you have accounts with global banks, you can also visit their branches in the country you are staying in to arrange a transfer.
Internet connectivity note:
At this moment, you need internet access to search, find addresses, contact banks, or reach out to diplomatic offices. Free Wi-Fi isn't available everywhere. You can visit public buildings like City Hall, Government Tourism Offices, or public hubs to use their Wi-Fi. You can also use free Wi-Fi at fast food restaurants like McDonald's, train stations (often limited to 15-30 minutes), or cafes.
