Quoc Tu Giam, constructed in 1076 under the rule of King Ly Nhan Tong, functioned as the inaugural university in Vietnam, dedicated to cultivating talent for the nation.
Van Mieu is situated south of Thang Long Citadel, facing south, covering a total area of 55,027 square meters, including Lake of Literature, the Garden of Stelae, and the Interior Study Rooms.
The complex of the Temple of Literature – Quoc Tu Giam is extensive, forming a rectangular shape with dimensions: length 306 m, front width 61 m, rear width 75 m, enclosed by a large brick wall – a common material during the Later Le Dynasty.
In the present day, the Temple of Literature - National University, located in Dong Da district (Hanoi), is surrounded by four bustling streets: Quoc Tu Giam street runs through the main gate to the South, Van Mieu street borders the East side, Ton Duc Thang street borders the West side; and behind it is Nguyen Thai Hoc street to the North.
