Yen Nhi is a devoted fan of Chinese cuisine, always on the lookout for excellent Chinese eateries in Saigon to satisfy her love for Chinese food. And she found herself enchanted by San Fu Lou.
Saigon, the hub of the Chinese community in Vietnam and the only place in the country with a Chinatown, boasts a rich Chinese culinary scene across its streets. As a lover of Chinese dishes, I always seek out the best restaurants to indulge in. Although San Fu Lou is a relatively recent addition since 2014, it has impressively won me over for 4 compelling reasons:
1. The First Cantonese Restaurant with an Open Design Concept
The Chinese are considered masters of their craft, particularly in culinary arts where their secrets are heavily guarded. Chinese kitchens are often deemed forbidden territories, with no one allowed to step inside, especially during food preparation.
So, when I first visited San Fu Lou, I was pleasantly surprised by the design. The kitchen and dining area were separated by only a glass partition. Diners outside could easily witness all the activities inside the kitchen.
At times, wisps of white smoke emanated from the steamers containing piping hot bao buns and dim sum. From my research, this is the first Cantonese restaurant in Vietnam with such an open kitchen design. Succulent roasted duck, glistening brown after being perfectly cooked, hung behind the glass, truly tantalizing.
2. The Meaning Behind the Name San Fu Lou
San Fu Lou, phonetically translated to Vietnamese as Tam Phuc Lau, means 'three blessings.' This encapsulates the essence and message that owners Asif Mehrudeen and Raymond wish to convey to everyone.
These three blessings encompass: Deliciousness – Nutritiousness – Hygiene. Upon sampling the dishes here, each one is fresh and free from the use of MSG in preparation. As someone highly allergic to MSG, consuming it usually results in severe headaches. However, when indulging in the dishes here, I experience no such discomfort.
3. The Menu Comprises Only 3 Main Dish Categories
In San Fu Lou's menu, there are three main categories of dishes: dim sum, roasted meats, and stir-fries.
Dim sum, Quang Dong style, usually comes in moderate portions, not overwhelming. These delectables are neatly presented in a steaming basket; as the lid is lifted, the warm vapor gently caresses the face, creating an exquisite sensation.
My first encounter with rainbow-colored bao buns happened right here. The thin yet resilient bun casing ensures it remains intact when picked up with chopsticks. The rich and fragrant filling emanates from well-seasoned meat, harmonizing perfectly with the chewy bun layer, making each bite delightful.
I observed the chefs wield substantial flames while stir-frying dishes. The food is tossed continuously, briefly pausing for seasoning and broth adjustment.
Roasted meats are cooked over a charcoal or wood-fired rotisserie, imparting a subtle smokiness to the meat's outer layer. The enticing blend of wood smoke and the savory aroma of the meat is mesmerizing, even more enchanting than Burberry perfume.
4. Scenic Seating for Instagram-Worthy Check-Ins
San Fu Lou features a system of glass windows enveloping the entire restaurant, allowing natural light to flood every corner. I can easily observe the bustling crowd outside on Phan Xich Long Street.

In the evening, the entire system of red lanterns illuminates, casting a gentle glow that doesn't strain the eyes. For those keen on snapping selfies, wearing brightly colored dresses will make you stand out and look stunning in photos.
