Paro Dzong Fortress

In 1968, Ta Dzong underwent transformation into the National Museum of Bhutan. This transformation marked a shift in its role from a defensive structure to a preserver of cultural heritage. The museum houses a diverse collection of art through artifacts, including traditional costumes, textiles, thangka paintings, weapons, and household items...
Tachog Lhakhang MonasteryEstablished in the early 15th century by Thangtong Gyalpo, a renowned Tibetan saint known for building iron bridges across the Himalayas. The monastery is particularly famous for its iron bridge, one of the few remaining bridges originally constructed by Thangtong Gyalpo. This bridge, made of iron chains, spans the Paro River, adding to the mystical allure of the place.

The monastery is often adorned with colorful prayer flags, creating a serene environment for visitors to admire. Its interior features many religious artworks, including wall paintings and sculptures, reflecting Bhutan's profound Buddhist traditions. The monastery also offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape along the Paro River.

National Memorial ChortenThe National Memorial Chorten (or Thimphu Chorten) stands as one of the most renowned attractions in the capital city of Thimphu. Built in 1974, the memorial stupa commemorates King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, the third king of Bhutan, known for his efforts in modernizing the nation. The architecture of the memorial reflects traditional design with its large domed roof, conical bell tower, and intricate paintings and carvings.

Inside the Chorten, visitors will find a wealth of religious and artistic treasures, including Buddha statues, thangka paintings, and Buddhist scriptures. Observers can witness Bhutanese devotees offering prayers, circumambulating the memorial, and spinning prayer wheels.

The Giant Buddha Dordenma Statue
The colossal Buddha Dordenma statue in Bhutan stands as one of the largest Buddha statues in the world, notably prominent for its size and unique location. Situated in the capital Thimphu, it was constructed to commemorate the 60th birthday of Jigme Singye Wangchuck, the fourth king of Bhutan. Completed in 2015, the statue stands approximately 51 meters tall, made of bronze gilded with gold. Inside the Buddha Dordenma statue are around 125,000 smaller Buddha statues, also made of bronze gilded with gold, symbolizing peace and prosperity.

Chimi Lhakhang MonasteryChimi Lhakhang is a Buddhist monastery in the Punakha district, situated on a hilltop and built in 1499 by the 14th Drukpa leader, Ngawang Choegyel. Legend has it that Lama Kunley subdued a demon at Dochu La pass with his 'magical thunderbolt of wisdom' upon establishing the monastery.

The monastery houses an original wooden phallus symbol brought from Tibet by Kunley. This wooden phallus is adorned with a silver handle and is used to bestow blessings upon pilgrims, particularly women seeking fertility blessings. The tradition at the monastery involves tapping pilgrims on the head with a 25 cm wooden phallus.
Tiger's Nest MonasteryTiger's Nest Monastery, also known as Paro Taktsang, stands as one of Bhutan's most prominent symbols and important spiritual sites. Perched on the steep cliffs of the Himalayas, this monastery is renowned not only for its unique geographical location but also for its profound history and spiritual significance.

According to legend, Guru Padmasambhava (also known as Guru Rinpoche), who brought Buddhism to Bhutan in the 8th century, flew here on the back of a tigress and meditated in a cave for three months. The monastery was later built around this cave in 1692. The monastery comprises numerous buildings and prayer halls perched precariously on the cliffside, creating a majestic panorama.
