Honkai: Star Rail is a complex turn-based game, so understanding tips right from the start will be beneficial for new players.
1. Grasp the Characters' Destiny

In Honkai: Star Rail, characters don't wield elemental powers like Genshin Impact; instead, there's a new mechanism called Destiny. Each Destiny corresponds to a different role in the lineup. Currently, the game features 7 main Destinies, including:
- Annihilator: DPS characters with survivability
- Hunter: Single-target Nuker characters
- Wisdom: Multi-target DPS character
- Harmony: Support character providing buffs to allies
- Void: Support character applying debuffs to enemies
- Safeguard: Tank character defending allies
- Prosperity: Healing and status dispelling character
Apart from assigning roles to players in battles, players can also collect materials based on Destiny. This applies to both weapons and character skills, as characters with the same Destiny can use shared weapons and gain effects from them.
2. Pre-emptive Strike Against Enemies

Engaging enemies before the battle provides a significant advantage for players. When present on the map, players can identify the weaknesses of enemies. After pre-emptive strikes, enemies will have reduced resistance before engaging.
Moreover, using Special Moves instead of regular attacks on enemies also accelerates battles. Notably, Natasha weakens enemies while protecting our faction. Asta or Aslan deal massive damage, with Asta even capable of eliminating enemies before engagement.
3. Identifying Enemies' Weaknesses

Upon engagement, players can clearly see the weaknesses of each enemy as the battle begins. Breaking their resistance will delay their actions. While this may not be crucial in regular battles, for bosses, delaying actions significantly impacts battle outcomes.
Additionally, players should focus on optimizing the exploitation of enemy weaknesses. The main character can break a substantial amount of enemy resistance, but they can only target a single enemy. Conversely, Jing Yuan or Asta can launch multiple attacks in one turn, thus breaking multi-target resistance. However, the mechanics of these characters are more complex, so players need to understand them well to optimize their usage.
4. Types of Skills

There are five basic types of skills in Honkai: Star Rail. These skills can be upgraded through the Trace system. You need to invest money and hunt for various materials every day to upgrade them. The five main skills include:
- Basic Attack: Unconditionally used and will restore one skill point.
- Battle Technique: Provides additional effects and better damage, but requires one skill point.
- Ultimate Move: Requires sufficient energy to execute and can be used outside the character's turn.
- Heavenly Gift: Passive abilities will activate automatically in battle.
- Secret Techniques: Only usable outside of battles
Unlike Genshin Impact, innate abilities do not automatically unlock upon character breakthroughs in Honkai: Star Rail. Instead, players must gradually unlock them through the Trace system. Meanwhile, the proficiency level can be easily upgraded to enhance its effect.
5. Battle Points and Secret Points

Both Battle Points and Secret Points have their own counters for players to use. Battle Points can be restored by normal attacks while Secret Points are restored when players defeat a 'purple object' outside the open world. In each area, this purple item has a different appearance, but as long as it's purple, it's what helps you recover points.
A regular attack will restore one Battle Point, while breaking the found object will restore 2 Secret Points. Initially, players will only have a limited number of points, but it will increase to the maximum after reaching a high level.
6. Utilizing Secret Techniques

Secret Techniques are skills that can only be used outside the open world, players can use them to attack before engaging. Each character will produce their own effects when using Secret Techniques. Most characters simply attack and deal pre-battle damage, however, some characters create additional effects. For example, the main character - the Explorer, restores 15% HP for the entire team, Dan Heng increases individual attack stats, or Bailu creates a healing effect after being attacked.
7. Destroying and examining everything on the map

In the open world, there are many objects that players can break. While ordinary items will give players money and crafting materials, purple objects will restore Secret Points, and green objects will heal the entire team.
However, in the Simulation Universe mode, everything is a bit different. Regular items will give you specific currency to use in this mode. Players will need to utilize everything according to their 'strategy' more. In the Simulation Universe, there are many powerful bosses and monsters, so players will need to save and distribute resources wisely.
Additionally, new players should explore the world as much as possible. Examining everything will bring about special events such as world missions or simply small items. Moreover, players can receive significant rewards by investigating these objects.
