Download the Google Maps app, pack the right type of plug adapter, bring a power bank, prepare cash before heading out... These are all crucial things to do before going abroad.
8 essential tips for hassle-free international travel

Download the Google Maps app
Before your trip, make sure to download the Google Maps app and select “Offline Maps” to prepare for situations without internet access. Then, choose “Custom Map” and outline the area you’re going to, and select “Download”. This way, you’ll always have a map with you wherever you go.
Sign up for an international data plan
If you plan to make calls and send texts the traditional way, sign up for an international data plan and choose the most suitable package. Remember to cancel the plan as soon as you return home.
Bring the correct type of power adapter/converters
Each country uses a different voltage, so it will be a big issue if you don’t research the power source and plug types in advance.
Before traveling abroad, prepare some power adapters, or research beforehand to bring the right ones. Also, don't forget to pack a phone charger in your carry-on luggage, in case your checked baggage gets lost.

Bring a power bank
A power bank is an extremely important accessory when you travel abroad. Phones often run out of battery very quickly when in roaming mode. Choose a compact and high-capacity power bank to save space in your luggage. You should also bring a slightly longer charging cable for convenience.
Check if ride-hailing apps are available at your destination
Uber or Grab are the best options when traveling abroad, especially in countries where calling a taxi is quite troublesome. You should check and download available apps in the destination country before you depart.
Use ATM cards to withdraw cash
Although credit cards are primarily used, you still need some foreign currency at your destination. Avoid currency exchange at the airport as the rates are often very high. ATM machines are an easy option, but you should choose ATMs from a specific bank rather than a currency exchange company.
Stay away from unbranded ATMs at shops or night markets. After withdrawing money, keep the receipt for checking when you get home.
Avoid credit card-related hassles
Credit cards are lifesavers when abroad. However, remember that some types of cards charge fees for each transaction overseas. Avoid using these types of cards simultaneously as the fees will add up significantly.
Opt for local currency payment if you have the option to “Check total amount in dollars”. Even though the card reader may show you the total amount in dollars, the exchange rate will surely be much higher than the rate at the bank that issued your credit card. Refuse to pay in dollars and choose to pay in the local currency.
Manage your passport
Before heading out, don't forget to photocopy your passport into 2 copies, one to leave at home for family or friends, and one to take with you. In case you lose your passport, this copy will help you solve any problems easily.
Additionally, take a photo of your passport on your phone to keep a digital copy.
Upon arrival, always keep your passport in a safe place like a hotel safe.
