The line between hero and villain is sometimes very fragile. With just one wrong action or thought, many of our heroes have stumbled and become incredibly vicious characters. Below, join us to explore 8 fallen heroes in the gaming world, as voted by GameRant magazine.
8. Prince Arthas (Warcraft III)

Among the heroes of the Warcraft world, perhaps Arthas Menethil has the strangest fate. As the son of Terenas Menethil, trusted by the holy warrior Uther Lightbringer, and believed to bring happiness to humanity, Arthas was manipulated by darkness and became a tool for the Lich King's schemes.
Since the moment he drew the Frostmourne sword and used it to defeat Mal’Ganis, Arthas's life has entered a new chapter. Unfortunately, it's all been a shade of gray. From a hero, an admirable leader of humanity, Arthas has slowly descended into darkness. Sadly, this cruelty was his own choice.
7. Artorias (Dark Souls)

Artorias, one of Gwyn's Four Knights, shared a portion of the Soul of Lord. A knight with wolf blood coursing through his veins, wielding a majestic sword in hand, accompanied by a giant gray wolf – Sif.
In the battle with the dark lord Manus, Artorias failed, unable to defeat Manus and succumbed to his darkness. Artorias became a pawn of Manus and later fell before the Chosen Undead (the player-controlled character).
6. Big Boss (Metal Gear Franchise)

This list would be meaningless without Big Boss from the Metal Gear Franchise. In his first appearance in the internally developed Metal Gear, Big Boss was depicted as a very dry and calculating character.
By Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, players began to realize the inherent darkness of Big Boss. He was so extreme that he only wanted to create a world filled with war, where those who existed there did so for the sole purpose of killing and fighting.
5. Captain Walker (Spec Ops: The Line)

Playing as a soldier traumatized by battles and things he witnessed firsthand, you'll see Walker gradually descend into a state of psychotic breakdown and severe delusions. As the game suggests, you, along with 2 comrades, venture into the city of Dubai to carry out an unauthorized mission, one that may not even be necessary. Walker traverses the desert, killing innocent civilians out of anger or stubbornness, then slowly sinking into despair. He is haunted by the past and the delusion that his enemy, John Konrad, is holding his teammates hostage, so he must execute a hostage rescue mission.
However, by the end of the game, both comrades are dead, leaving Walker alone with hands stained with the blood of those he killed, including innocent civilians who perished due to white phosphorus. Only then does Walker realize the truth. John Konrad was killed long ago, Walker's radio has been malfunctioning from the start of the game until now, the original order he received was to evacuate from the city, and everything that has happened is all his own imagination.
