Experience Dubai like a local!
Before exploring Dubai's desert and the Burj Khalifa, here are some things to keep in mind. To make the most of your stay, we've been tipped off by some locals with a few tricks as well as some travel advice for those planning to visit Dubai soon. Keep reading and discover what they've shared!
1. Don't just focus on skyscrapers and luxurious malls

Dubai isn't just about the Burj Khalifa and big malls. This city actually has a rich history – and that's really hard to uncover! Find your way to Old Town Dubai to experience the finest Arab culture and the markets at Dubai Creek for bargain shopping. If you have a free day, locals suggest you take a day trip to Abu Dhabi to see the grand mosques, where you can learn more about the country's Islamic heritage.
2. Food can be very cheap

If you think food in Dubai is expensive, you're not entirely wrong. However, you can still have some delicious and affordable meals if you know where to go! Skip the Dubai Mall, JBR, or downtown and head to local markets, outdoor markets for more choices!
According to locals, head to Bur Dubai & Deira or Al Barsha for shawarma, oman rolls, and samosas priced from $2 to $8 per meal. On Fridays, Alloro, Andalucia Tapas & Grill, and Lamesa offer great deals for traditional breakfast.
3. Eat together
In Dubai, it's really strange to order a meal just for yourself. People usually order large portions and share with each other in the same group. So, unless you're traveling alone, make sure you order large portions to share! Plus – this method also helps you save money.
4. Don't take the metro, take a taxi

While the metro is certainly cheaper, it's also quite inconvenient. Stations are far from interesting places, so you have to travel a long way to get where you want. Because Dubai is not a walking city, taking a taxi is really the best choice – and that's what locals advise. With the main attractions quite far apart, taxi fares in the city are quite reasonable. Also – don't forget the tip for the driver!
5. Visit downtown or Dubai Marina instead of The Palm

Unless you're flying over The Palm by private helicopter, locals suggest you completely skip The Palm. Avoid crazy traffic jams in this area and instead head to Dubai Marina or downtown!
6. Take advantage of Happy Hour

Drinking in Dubai can be quite expensive. But that doesn't mean you have to miss out on everything! Thanks to many Happy Hour deals across the city, you'll be able to enjoy a night out without spending too much. However, if you miss Happy Hour, don't pay 15 SGD to 20 SGD for a beer.
7. Avoid public displays of affection
Not many tourists are aware of this, but there's a strict gender segregation in this country, so even the simplest hug in public can get you in trouble. Even if you're traveling with people of the same gender, avoid any intimate gestures while you're in Dubai to stay away from prying eyes.
8. Buy a copy of The Entertainer magazine

As soon as you land in Dubai, head to a convenience store or supermarket and buy a copy of The Entertainer magazine. Although it may be a bit pricey (185 SGD), it's packed with discount offers and promotions at restaurants and activities that you can use throughout your stay. It's quite worth it!
9. Malls are for fun, not for shopping

If you want to save money, don't spend at Dubai's big malls. For souvenirs and local goods, the best place to buy is outdoor markets like the Ripe Market in Zabeel Park! Here, you'll find plenty of antiques, handicrafts, food, and more.

However, this doesn't mean you shouldn't visit famous shopping malls during your time here. The Dubai Mall (one of the city's shopping malls) has more than just shopping, including a host of great entertainment activities for anyone with an interest in aquariums, the world's largest indoor snow park, an ice rink, and a bookstore!
10. Be respectful!
Although foreigners outnumber locals in Dubai, it's important to remember that this city has a Muslim culture. Therefore, you must respect all the cultural aspects and traditions that the locals adhere to. For example, tourists must be mindful of the rules in mosques (especially if you plan to visit some mosques on your trip), be respectful to the elderly, and avoid offending the Royal Family.
