Table cages priced at 30 million VND are intricately woven with fine threads, pure white, weighing 290 grams. Buyers don't use them to cover rice dishes but display them as precious items in their homes. These handmade products are the brainchild of Mr. Tran Van Kha, 75 years old, and Mrs. Nguyen Thi Tien, 72 years old.
A husband-wife duo innovates unique table cages with a price tag of 30 million VND
Located 25 km from the center of Hanoi, Phu Vinh village (Phu Nghia commune, Chuong My district) is renowned for its tradition of weaving bamboo for over 400 years. The ancient village's products, including artworks with Han script woven from bamboo, are now preserved in the Hue Imperial City's antique museum. One of the most famous contemporary items is the 'man tuyn' table cage created by Mr. Tran Van Kha, 75 years old, and Mrs. Nguyen Thi Tien, 72 years old.
In the early months of 2010, the table cage crafted by the couple was exhibited by the Vietnamese Handicraft and Fine Arts Export Association. Observing the meticulous and perfectionist work of the couple, both local and international visitors admired them. For three consecutive years, from 2012 to 2014, the couple was invited abroad to exchange experiences and showcase their craftsmanship. At a fair in Zhejiang, China, whenever the Vietnamese couple 'handled threads like playing a musical instrument, weaving with precision,' onlookers would abandon their tasks to gather and watch.
Despite market demand and the desire of their children for them to rest, Mr. and Mrs. Tran only take on occasional projects. Since the beginning of this year, they have woven two cages for a Thai customer and one for a neighbor as a gift. Occasionally, they research new products, with plans to create a table cage designed to cover ceremonial dishes on festive occasions.
