The Origins of the Names
There are many legends surrounding the name Núi Chúa Bà Nà. According to folklore, there is a sacred shrine of the Holy Virgin Mary on the mountain, hence the name Núi Chúa.

French doctor Albert Salle, when he came to Bà Nà, studied this location. He believed that Núi Chúa was initially peaceful but transformed into a mysterious world at night, where the benevolent goddess, the Holy Virgin Mary, appeared.
Regarding the name Bà Nà Hills, when the French discovered this mountainous area, they found many wild banana trees growing. Thus, they called it 'Banane' - the Banana Mountain. Vietnamese pronunciation turned it into Bà Nà.

There is also a legend that says the mountain's name is an abbreviation of the name of the Holy Mother Thien Y A Na (Ponagar). Writer Nguyên Ngọc believes Bà Nà is a word in the language of the Cơtu people, meaning 'my mountain'.
