Hogwarts Legacy surprises many by not making an appearance in any nominations at this year's edition of The Game Awards.
Recently, the nominations for The Game Awards 2023 - the most prestigious awards in the global gaming industry - have been announced. Unlike last year when all eyes were on the fierce competition between Elden Ring and God of War: Ragnarok, this year's surprise comes right from the nomination stage. Perhaps no one expected that a successful and highly acclaimed game like Hogwarts Legacy would miss out on all the nominations for this year's awards.
Launched earlier this year, Hogwarts Legacy received high acclaim on all platforms it was released on, even earning near-perfect scores from both gamers and experts alike. Despite knowing that 2023 is a year filled with high-quality blockbusters, and Hogwarts Legacy itself faces tough competition for the most prestigious title, the fact that this game doesn't appear in any nominations can be considered a major shock. It's worth noting that even the Grammys recognized the music used in Hogwarts Legacy as outstanding. However, the game is conspicuously absent from similar nominations at The Game Awards 2023.
Currently, there has been no official statement or explanation. The simplest reason may be that critics feel Hogwarts Legacy doesn't truly deserve it, but perhaps that's not convincing enough for fans of this blockbuster. Nevertheless, it's also worth noting that while Hogwarts Legacy has done very well as a game, its association with the Harry Potter brand and the author of the novels has also sparked quite a bit of controversy.
Regardless of the reason, fans of Hogwarts Legacy may only feel regret. In fact, this is not the first time that The Game Awards nominations have faced controversy, as seen with the absence of Sonic Frontiers from last year's ceremony.
