The presence of Galaxy Tab 2 7-inch and Google Nexus 7 is heating up the sub-10 million VND tablet market.
1. A myriad of options for purchasing budget-friendly tablets.
Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 and Nexus 7 stand out in the realm of budget tablets. After an initial scarcity, Google's tablets are becoming more prevalent in Vietnam, albeit through unofficial channels, with prices significantly higher than the US market. The 8 GB variant is being offered from 6.3 million VND, while the 16 GB model is priced above 7 million VND.
Meanwhile, in the official market, Samsung's 7-inch Tab 2 is now available for purchase at 8 million VND. According to retailers in Ho Chi Minh City, this tablet boasts the best sales figures at present.

The sub-10 million VND tablet category emerged last year but gained real traction only when the price of the iPad 2 dropped. Currently, this device in the unofficial market is priced at around 8 to 10 million VND. Subsequently, Asus and Acer also reduced prices for their Transformer and Iconia Tab models to compete. Samsung adjusted the price of the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 from the expected 9.5 million VND to 8 million VND to stay competitive without reducing prices for their older models. Additionally, in the unofficial market, consumers can choose from the BlackBerry PlayBook, Kindle Fire, or a variety of tablets from the Archos brand.
While the premium tablet segment is dominated by the iPad 3, the ultra-affordable tablet category is plagued by quality concerns. In contrast, models from 'premium' brands priced under 10 million VND have become the focus of many manufacturers and customers.
Mr. Le Tan, manager of an electronics store on Cach Mang Thang 8 Street (District 3, Ho Chi Minh City), believes that the mid-range tablet market is quite diverse. Users are not only choosing 7-inch devices but also many 10-inch models. 'Good prices and better product quality are driving tablet sales. In the past, only high-end tablets sold well, but the current market has seen positive changes,' said Mr. Tan.
Many retailers believe that the competition among major brands is benefiting consumers. There are many rumors about the upcoming release of a 7-inch Apple tablet. If this model appears, it will make the mid-range tablet race even more vibrant. In Vietnam, tablets are still the preferred device after laptops and smartphones. This product line targets a specific group of customers who need a mobile device for web browsing and entertainment.
