From a beloved superstar, Cao Van Tuong has lost his career and his happy family after a scandal involving group sexual assault.
Cao Van Tuong, a prominent actor in the Chinese film industry, known for his successful career and roles in famous films like 'The Legend of the Moon', 'The Story of Lu Xun'... Furthermore, Cao Van Tuong used to have a happy family with actress Dong Tuyen and their young daughter. However, the once esteemed figure of the Chinese entertainment industry had to pay a hefty price, losing everything after the scandal of group sexual assault in Australia.
The scandal of group sexual assault shook public opinion.
In March 2018, Cao Van Tuong and Vuong Tinh were accused of sexually assaulting a woman in Sydney, Australia. This unprecedented incident not only shook public opinion in China but also across Asia.
The victim was a member of the cast of the film 'Love In Aranya', in which Cao Van Tuong starred. According to the victim's statement, on the night of the incident, the film crew held a party before going to a karaoke club. The victim went to the hotel where the two actors were staying, thinking that others would also come to join the party. However, to her dismay, she was sexually assaulted by Cao Van Tuong and Vuong Tinh in the bathroom of the hotel.
After the scandal broke, the two actors were urgently arrested. Both denied the rape allegations, with Cao Van Tuong claiming to have consensual relations with the victim. Subsequently, the actor was held under house arrest awaiting trial, unable to leave Australia for 22 months for investigation. Surprisingly, after 2 years, Cao Van Tuong was acquitted due to insufficient evidence and was released to return to China.
The price to pay is too high.
Although acquitted, Cao Van Tuong paid a hefty price for his actions. Before the scandal broke, Cao Van Tuong had a happy family with Dong Tuyen and their young daughter born in 2016. Initially, Dong Tuyen stood by her husband, contacting top lawyers, even bringing their daughter to Australia and renting a house to take care of Cao Van Tuong during the investigation process.
However, perhaps due to exhaustion and lost trust in her husband, Dong Tuyen filed for divorce from Cao Van Tuong in July 2019. The actress gained custody of their daughter and held significant assets after the divorce. Cao Van Tuong's dream-like family officially shattered, arguably his biggest loss.
The sex scandal also hindered Cao Van Tuong's return to the entertainment industry. Once a sought-after name, now no one wants to collaborate with the adulterous actor. Cao Van Tuong was abandoned by the audience, boycotted, and no producer wants to work with him anymore.
By March 2022, Cao Van Tuong even lost a lawsuit against his former partner, the Duong Duc Film and Television Company. Duong Duc stated that they suffered significant losses due to the scandal and demanded Cao Van Tuong to pay a total of 50 million yuan (approximately 180 billion dong). Additionally, the actor and his current management company, Cultural Arts Nguyen, are jointly liable.
Losing his family, a frozen career, facing a colossal compensation, all have pushed Cao Van Tuong into difficult circumstances. Many have noticed that the actor no longer resembles a star, having to sell many luxury items at a discount to make ends meet. Due to the severe rape scandal, the actor born in 1982 had to pay a heavy price, losing both his family and career.
