Home security cameras are gaining popularity in Vietnam, but they're also severely lacking in safety measures, with many instances of sensitive clips being leaked from these camera systems.
A concerning security incident has occurred with a family's security cameras as a white-hat hacker attacked a multitude of surveillance cameras worldwide, including in Vietnam, to alert users about security vulnerabilities since 2021. Notably, these vulnerabilities have impacted hundreds of millions of security cameras globally.

Recently, on the monitoring screens of many security cameras in Vietnam, users have discovered an English warning message stating, 'Your security camera is vulnerable to attacks and may be compromised. Act quickly to remedy. Do it yourself or contact me via message.'
Experts have confirmed that the devices displaying these alerts have been compromised through vulnerabilities detected since 2021. Known as CVE-2021-36260, this vulnerability exists across dozens of security camera models, allowing hackers to remotely infiltrate systems without user interaction. This vulnerability is rated 9.8/10 on the CVSS scale, indicating its high severity.

Sadly, many devices, produced since 2016, still haven't received software updates to address this vulnerability. Not long ago, singer Van Mai Huong was also alleged to have leaked sensitive clips from her home camera. Some speculate that Van Mai Huong's camera may have been infiltrated by malicious actors. Nguyen Minh Duc, CEO of CyRadar Information Security Company, stated that information leakage from home camera systems is entirely possible.

According to Duc, there are many reasons why clips from home camera systems leak, but the main reason is that homeowners fail to change their accounts and passwords after installation. Additionally, using easily guessable passwords for camera accounts makes it easy for others to steal and access the system. Duc also emphasized that after installing a camera system, users should change their passwords and access accounts, even creating a new account to ensure safety and avoid unnecessary trouble.

Furthermore, setting strong passwords and avoiding the use of public tools to check home cameras are necessary measures to protect personal information security. Security device manufacturers also need to increase efforts in updating software and patching security vulnerabilities to prevent potential attacks.
This incident serves as an important reminder to ensure safety when using home camera devices. Taking basic security measures such as changing passwords, creating strong passwords, and regularly updating software is necessary to protect personal information and ensure security at home.

Changing and upgrading the security system of home cameras is essential to protect personal information and ensure security at home. By taking measures such as changing passwords, updating software, restricting connections to public internet, and enhancing cybersecurity awareness, we can minimize the risk of hackers exploiting vulnerabilities and effectively protect personal data.
