The recent release of The Little Mermaid has set audiences abuzz.
Just two weeks after its release, Disney's The Little Mermaid has crossed the $326 million global mark, surpassing the 1989 animated classic. Despite leading the box office, Disney's latest live-action adaptation faces significant challenges. Now, an unexpected version of The Little Mermaid graces the silver screen, captivating audiences.

On June 2nd, The Asylum unveiled its rendition of The Little Mermaid. Although limited to select theaters, the animated film generated quite a buzz on social media. According to insiders, this version draws direct inspiration from Andersen's fairy tale, setting it apart from Disney's rendition. As a result, character designs in this adaptation stand out.

The trailer for The Asylum's The Little Mermaid offers audiences a blend of the familiar and the new. While it retains the essence of a little mermaid exploring the land and encountering a sea witch, this version introduces unique character designs and names. Gone is Ariel; in her place is Sereia, adorned with chestnut-colored hair. Instead of Flounder, she befriends a turtle named Sheldon.

The villain isn't the familiar sea witch Ursula but a new character named Revina. Disney's Prince Eric is renamed Lucas in this adaptation.

The Asylum is renowned for its films that mimic Hollywood blockbusters. Before The Little Mermaid, the studio released several movies concurrently with major releases like Top Gun: Maverick, Avatar sequel, Thor sequel... Although their visual quality may not rival Disney's, this animated Little Mermaid receives acclaim for its stunning animation, compelling storyline, and notably, its tribute to Andersen.
