After installing Windows 10, users can protect against data writing on external devices like USB to safeguard data. Once USB write protection mode is activated, users can block access and protect user USB data. This is considered as one of the very simple yet effective ways to protect USB data but is less used due to some operations that not all users are familiar with, especially after many Windows 10 errors which can lead to data loss on USB at any time.
Guide to Activate USB Write Protection Mode
Activate USB Write Protection Mode on Windows 10
Step 1: Open Registry Editor on Windows 10 by pressing Start Menu > typing Regedit or regedit.exe and accessing the search results.
Or you can also press Windows + R to open the Run command box > type regedit.exe and press Enter.
Step 2: In the Windows Registry interface, you navigate to the following path:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControl
Step 3: Create a new subkey on the Control key by right-clicking on Control > New > Key and naming the new key: StorageDevicePolicies.
Step 4: In the StorageDevicePolicies code, continue to create a new 32-bit DWORD key and name it WriteProtect.
Step 5: Double-click on that key or right-click and select Modify and change the value to 1. Even if you're running a 64-bit version of Windows 10, you still need to enable creating a 32-bit DWORD value.
Step 6: Reconnect your USB if you've disconnected them from your computer.
Your USB notification is locked and in write protection mode.
After setting the value for the WriteProtect key to 1 and reconnecting the USB, the command to block writing data to the USB will be activated immediately. Therefore, users can only connect USB and read the data in it without being able to write data from the computer to the USB and vice versa.
You won't be able to perform any copy, drag-and-drop operations with the USB anymore as the system has activated USB write protection mode on Windows 10.
Even options like Delete or New will disappear from the context menu. You can open Command Prompt and then enter the command :>del setup.exe to check if the del command exists on the USB. Here, represents your USB drive name displayed on the computer.
So after activating this feature, you can rest assured that no one can access, copy, or modify data in your USB anymore; they can only read your data. In addition to using Windows Registry, you can also use alternative software with similar features like USB WriteProtector. By using USB WriteProtector software, you can quickly protect your USB without having to access complex settings.
Protecting USB data by activating USB write protection mode on Windows 10 is quite useful for professional users. However, if you lack skills, you can use USB Security software to protect your USB. The feature of setting password protection for USB with USB Security is quite prominent and common to protect users from security risks.
Wishing you all success!
