With the Picture-in-Picture feature on YouTube, when you're watching any video and press the back button to find another video, the currently playing video will detach from the player and move into a small window at the bottom-right corner.
Using Picture-in-Picture mode
Picture-in-Picture on Android Oreo works similarly to Picture-in-Picture on YouTube, but instead of limiting the minimized video window to run within a specific app, you can move this minimized video window to any position on the operating system.
Imagine you're watching a music video on YouTube but need to check your Google Feed. All you have to do is press the Home button, and the playing video will detach from the player into a minimized window at the bottom-right corner. You can even select and drag this minimized window to any position on the screen and multitask.
Activating and Disabling Picture-in-Picture on Android Oreo
To expand or close the video, simply tap on the minimized video window to display the control buttons. The center button will bring the minimized video window back into the app (in this case, YouTube), the headphone icon to close the preview mode and play audio in the background (if you're subscribed to YouTube Red).
Currently, this new Picture-in-Picture mode only works in some Google apps, including Chrome (all versions), Duo, Play Movies, Maps, and YouTube. It's highly possible that in the near future, Netflix will also soon integrate Picture-in-Picture.
Disabling Picture-in-Picture in specific apps
For whatever reason users may choose not to use the Picture-in-Picture feature, especially in specific apps. If desired, you can also enable or disable Picture-in-Picture in a specific app. Here's how to do it:
First, on your Android Oreo device, pull down the notification panel, then tap on the gear icon to access the Settings menu.
Here, locate and select Apps & Notifications, then expand the menu Advanced by tapping on Advanced.
Next, find and select the option Special App Access located at the bottom-right corner of the Advanced menu.
Find and open the option Picture-in-Picture.
All apps with Picture-in-Picture functionality are listed here. By default, Picture-in-Picture feature is enabled for all apps. To disable Picture-in-Picture for a specific app, simply toggle the Allow picture-in-picture option to Off.
