The new update for Premiere Pro will implement hardware-accelerated video encoding for faster editing and video export. Version 14.2 of Premiere Pro and Adobe Media Encoder will utilize separate hardware encoders on Nvidia and AMD GPUs to reduce video export time by up to 400%. This update will also apply to After Effects and Audition.

Hardware acceleration in Premiere Pro is no longer a novelty. It has been leveraging Nvidia CUDA for a while. Version 14.2 integrates Nvidia's Nvencode API to utilize AMD GPU's VCE hardware encoding. Both enhancements significantly improve video rendering speed compared to CPU-only processing, especially for handling 4K videos.
According to Manish Kulkarni, Adobe's Technical Director, 'These advancements are the result of years of collaboration between Nvidia and Adobe to deliver high-quality applications and tools for the creative community. With the new support for NVIDIA GPUs on Windows, video exporting is accelerated by harnessing the power of the CPU, making Premiere Pro even more robust and helping creators work efficiently, saving time.' Additionally, this update adds support for Apple's ProRes RAW files, ensuring equivalent video import and export capabilities between Windows and macOS.
In a real-world test using the GeForce RTX 2060 and Intel Core i9 9750H, Nvidia found that the RTX outperformed by approximately 2.5 times when performing basic transcoding on 4K video. It's worth noting that Nvidia used a laptop with a 6-core CPU for this comparison. Adobe recommends users to use 'CPU 3.2 GHz or higher with 8 cores' for video editing workstations running Premiere Pro.
Adding further on their help page, Adobe states: 'Intel Core i7 or Core i9 processors or equivalent AMD are also recommended. Depending on the task, Premiere can operate with performance ranging from 93-98% with an 8-core processor'. Therefore, appropriately equipped workstations will show better results. The company will release an update by the end of this week.
