The Origin of the Name Nha Trang

When the Cham people inhabited the area of present-day Nha Trang city, there were many coconut trees growing along both banks of the river. The white coconut flowers bloomed abundantly, creating a magnificent scene. The Cham Pa people called their land 'the coconut riverbank.'
The term 'Nha Trang' is believed to be a variant of 'Eatrang,' 'Yatrang,' or 'Jatrang.' According to the phonetics of the Cham people, 'ea,' 'ya,' or 'ja' all mean 'river,' while 'trang' means 'coconut.' Later, the Vietnamese mispronounced it as “Nha Trang” for easier pronunciation.
In Lê Quý Đôn's Miscellaneous Records written in 1776, various names for Nha Trang were used such as: 'Nha Trang lagoon,' 'Nha Trang palace,' 'Nha Trang spring,' 'Nha Trang pass.'
