Besides factors like gameplay, graphics, and sound, a significant aspect contributing to the success of most major games lies in storytelling, guiding players to truly immerse themselves in the virtual world, embarking on adventures alongside the characters. However, not every game publisher pays attention to this. In the past, numerous games, despite receiving immense anticipation and meeting all the essential elements, turned into 'flops', catastrophically failing simply because they didn't construct the desired storyline.
Metroid: Other M
The Metroid series has garnered immense popularity thanks to its simple yet highly effective storytelling approach. Void of lengthy, cinematic narratives, Metroid primarily immerses players in its vast universe, enabling gamers to easily connect. However, in the later installment, Metroid: Other M fails entirely as it attempts to approach in a more detailed, specific manner.
Bioshock: Infinite
Bioshock itself began to build a reputation for the brand thanks to its captivating storytelling style. The storyline, though simple, is well-executed, focusing on the main plot without wasting any moments. With minimal dialogue and a strong focus on the central narrative, Bioshock has been incredibly successful with what it has achieved.
However, Bioshock Infinite tells a completely different story. It raises many intriguing questions, yet the game abandons all opportunities for players to explore the plot. Instead, it delivers bland moral messages, resulting in the game being voted as a mess, sloppy, and careless by gamers.
Duke Nukem Forever
One of the once-popular game formulas was to heavily focus on the main character, making them the center and icon of the game. To this day, this remains a highly effective approach. Duke Nukem Forever follows this formula, but fails miserably due to its poor portrayal of the main character.
As a result, the character Duke Nukem is overly powerful, masculine, yet engages in actions that make players feel ruthless and despicable. This is why, to this day, Duke Nukem remains one of the most controversial characters in the gaming world.
