The character most clearly embodying the theme of the work is perhaps Giang - a young girl, innocent yet remarkably caring and considerate.
Firstly, it's evident that Pham Nhat Giang had to live in rather difficult circumstances. Her family originally resided in Kham Thien, a bustling alley, but now they have moved to a simple place, a 'thatched hut with mud walls,' 'with barely any belongings.' According to the narrator, Giang's mother passed away, and her elder brother had just left for duty in support of the Southern battlefield. Her father is a major, always busy with his duties. He managed to borrow that small shack from an acquaintance in the town to welcome his daughter for Tet. However, due to the tense wartime situation, late-night emergency meetings became increasingly frequent, leaving him with little time to spend with Giang. Just arrived from Hanoi, all alone in this 'remote and desolate town,' 'melancholy' as it is, the girl must have been truly delighted to unexpectedly find herself another friend.
Despite living in such a lonely, dreary environment, Giang still shines with a precious inner beauty and the enthusiasm of youth. She is a caring, considerate, and delicate girl. This is vividly demonstrated through an unexpected encounter with a soldier. Seeing the young man covered in mud, she proactively offers to fetch water to help him wash his hands and feet. But not only that, she personally scrubs the mud off him: 'one hand tilting the water bucket, pouring gently, while the other hand, she scrubbed the mud off his feet, ankles, and even his rubber sandals,' leaving the young soldier 'motionless,' 'stunned' by 'such innocent and unexpected kindness.'
Giang is also a very carefree and hospitable girl. She eagerly invites the soldier to her home to rest and have some water, even prepares a meal for him. Perhaps it's because Giang sees him as a soldier, doing the job of protecting the Fatherland like her father, so she feels very sympathetic.
