Epic poems are grand-scale folk autobiographical works, often composed and transmitted within small ethnic communities. Epic poems typically focus on constructing grandiose, heroic artistic images, thus they serve not only as historical monuments but also as encyclopedias of the entire ethnic group. Indeed, within epic poems, we often encounter the images of heroes, individuals embodying the beauty and noble qualities of an entire ethnic community. 'Victory Over Mtao Mxây' is an excerpt taken from the representative epic work of the ethnic groups of the Central Highlands. The excerpt focuses on the image of Đăm Săn - a brave warrior, a great leader embodying all noble qualities, representing the entire ethnic community.
Đăm Săn is a leader, a devoted husband, a courageous soldier, and a proud individual. However, his pride, his dignity was trampled upon by the cowardly, scheming tactics of Mtao Mxây who stole his wife. Living under a patriarchal system, being robbed of a wife by enemies is akin to provocation, a great humiliation for Đăm Săn himself and the entire ethnic community. Therefore, he decides to seek out Mtao Mxây, the one who took away his beloved wife, to seek revenge and reclaim the happiness of his life.
Speaking of Mtao Mxây, a cowardly villain full of cunning tactics. His martial arts may be ordinary but his mind is more cunning than others, always plotting to harm others. But his despicable nature is even more detestable when, in Đăm Săn's absence, this criminal boldly comes to the house and captures Hơ-Nhị, not stopping there, he also pillages Đăm Săn's village. And in the end, his cowardice also comes with a price, he is forced to participate in a fierce battle between righteousness and evil, between justice and the despicable, contemptible evil.
The beginning of the battle is the image of Đăm Săn's brave and majestic demeanor. He confidently steps into the enemy's territory, challenging them openly: 'Ơ diêng! I challenge your house down here to fight with me'. Đăm Săn's majestic and resolute demeanor makes the enemy tremble with fear, outwardly Mtao Mxây appears to be a fierce individual, with some semblance of a leader, but inside he is completely different, witnessing the majestic demeanor, the determination in the eyes of that heroic leader makes him feel fear, he hesitates for a long time but eventually, that arrogant coward finally has to step down and accept the challenge of the brave warrior fighting for justice.
The appearance of Mtao Mxây is vividly depicted by the author through the art of exaggeration: 'He wears a striped piece... thick and rough', 'His shield is as round as a ball, his sword shines like a rainbow. He looks ferocious like a deity.'. That is the magnificent image of the villain, however, that alone is not enough to overshadow his despicable appearance. Without even fighting with Đăm Săn, he already shows signs of fear, he fears being stabbed by Đăm Săn while walking. Those words clearly demonstrate his cowardice, while the hero is ready to go alone to his territory for battle, he doesn't bother to resort to cowardly tactics like him. In the end, it's just the thoughts of a coward standing in the dark, stabbing others in the back and thinking that everyone acts despicably like him.
Entering the battle, Mtao Mxây pretends to give way to Đăm Săn, dances with his shield first, and uses words to show off his superiority, demonstrating his martial arts. However, when it's his turn to dance, he 'squeaks like a dried gourd', 'steps high and low', actions that speak volumes, proving that the words of the villain are just deceitful and hollow.
The dirty thoughts of the coward are unpredictable. Indeed, Mtao Mxây used his cunning and cowardly mind to wait for the opportunity to stab Đăm Săn in the back. However, the plot failed and Mtao Mxây 'only hit a buffalo trough'.
Despite his bravado, Mtao Mxây's strength is limited, when he tires, he seeks refuge in Hơ-Nhị's betel nut and the armor covering his body. His plan was indeed perfect, but the mistake was that he did not think about Hơ-Nhị throwing that betel nut to her husband, thus the cunning one dug his own grave. Đăm Săn received the betel nut from his wife, his strength multiplied, he wielded his sword fiercely towards the enemy. However, that armor was too tough and thick, making Mtao Mxây repeatedly fail, Đăm Săn's sword stabbed him but could not penetrate that armor, and only when he received the help of the gods did the situation change, causing the enemy to be defeated. After a while of blaming, Đăm Săn finally finished off the enemy, he 'stabbed' into the enemy, the decisive action of the leader punishing the one who had tarnished honor, robbed full of dirty tricks.
