Question 4 page 39 History Exercise Book 5
Write a short paragraph about an exemplary combatant in the historical campaign of Dien Bien Phu that you know.
* Solution Guide:
Tô Vĩnh Diện (1924 - 1953) hailed from Nong Cong district, Thanh Hoa. Joining the military in 1949, until 1953. During the Dien Bien Phu campaign, he served as a platoon leader of a high-altitude artillery unit. The route for transporting the artillery was extremely perilous and challenging. Despite the difficulties, he successfully led the artillery to a safe assembly point. Upon receiving orders to withdraw the artillery, during the night, on a steep slope, the hauling rope broke, and the artillery barrel began to rapidly descend. He shouted to his comrades, 'Better sacrifice myself, ensure the protection of the artillery!' and he wedged himself beneath the wheels, preventing the artillery from plummeting into the ravine. Tô Vĩnh Diện epitomized the selfless sacrifice of soldiers during the Dien Bien Phu campaign in the struggle for independence and freedom for the nation.

* Step-by-step guide:
Poem 1: 'Tribute to the Heroes of Dien Bien' - Tố Hữu
'Tribute to the Heroes of Dien Bien
Heroic soldiers
Heads ablaze with iron
Fifty-six days and nights digging into mountains, sleeping in trenches, enduring relentless rain, squeezing dry meals
Blood mixed with mud and soil
Unyielding courage
Indomitable spirit!
Comrades buried as human shields
Heads wrapped in camouflage nets
Braving steel-studded mountains
Through raging storms and tempests,
Comrades carrying wounded comrades on their backs
Battered bodies, eyes shut, still embracing...
Hands splitting mountains to roll bombs.
Clearing the way for our vehicles to advance to the battlefield hospital.'
Poem 2: 'Return to Dien Bien' - Thiên Ân
The day you returned to Dien Bien,
Feet wandering dreams on high mountains.
Long been dreaming of this encounter,
Appointment carved in stone still lingers.
Muong Thanh enveloped in white clouds,
Fields basking in the morning sun.
Fences, zinc wires, barbed steel...
Dien Bien, once a place of flying bullets and lingering fires.
