Analyzing Tran Quoc Tuấn's patriotism and hatred towards enemies as portrayed through Hịch tướng sĩ.
Task:
The spirit of patriotism has long been a cherished tradition in the hearts of the Vietnamese people. This love for the country is also brought into literature by poets and writers with new and sincere colors, expressed in many aspects. It is love for nature, pride in the beauty of the land and rivers. It is admiration for the courageous fighting spirit in the face of enemy gunfire. It is the love of language, of the roots of the nation. And this love for the country is once again deeply expressed by Tran Quoc Tuấn in the poem 'Hịch tướng sĩ,' a poem he wrote before the Mongol - Yuan resistance war to encourage the fighting spirit of the Tran dynasty's people.
The poem contains the heartfelt spirit of patriotism and the indomitable will of a talented leader. Firstly, patriotism is expressed in pride, admiration for the names of ancestors who achieved great victories. It is wholehearted loyalty and service to the lord of the heroes. It is the heroic battles with the armies of many heroes who sacrificed for the beloved country. They are the examples to enlighten us, to motivate our fighting spirit. It is the spirit of serving the country passed down through generations. 'We often hear: Kỷ Tín sacrificed himself to save the Emperor; Do Vu protected Thái Vương from danger; Dự Nhượng swallowed bitterness to avenge his lord; Thân Khoái cut off his hand to save the country. Honorable is a young man who saved Thái Tông from Thái Sung's siege; Cảo Khanh bravely criticized Lộc Sơn, refusing to follow the enemy's plan. Since ancient times, there have always been loyal subjects willing to sacrifice themselves for the country, which era did not have?'. True heroes must achieve great success, glorious deeds to be remembered for generations. By presenting the examples of heroes, Tran Quoc Tuấn made the soldiers reflect on themselves, to see if they are worthy of the indomitable traditions left by the previous generations.
Secondly, Hung Dao Vuong's patriotism is shown in his hatred towards enemies. The intense patriotism burns brighter, the greater the indignation towards the cruel enemy. He exposed the crimes, tyranny, and greed of the enemy. The enemy was treacherous, malicious, and greedy. Their actions were like beasts, vicious and cruel: 'we were born into troubled times, grew up in difficult times. We watched the enemy envoy passing by, mocking the court with arrogance, twisting the kite's tail to insult the court; using the body of a goat to insult our ancestors. Yielding to Hốt Tất Liệt's demands for jewels to satisfy their insatiable greed; wearing the Vân Nam Vương emblem to hoard silver and gold, to exhaust the limited treasury. It's no different than throwing meat to hungry tigers, avoiding future disasters.'
The spirit is also shown in the heart of a general who worries day and night about the fate of the nation in a critical situation, with dangers looming large and the homeland difficult to preserve. The author has been deeply sorrowful, compassionate, and concerned, pondering over the country's current situation. The enemy is ravaging the homeland, the people are lamenting, suffering greatly, causing the knights' hearts to be restless. 'I often forget to eat, knock on my pillow at midnight, my stomach hurts so much, tears well up'. The resentment turns into strong and decisive actions: 'even if I expose a hundred bodies to the internal grass, wrap a thousand bodies in horsehide, I am willing to do so'. It is the utmost resentment of a heart imbued with patriotism and love for the people. A determination so firm, even if it requires sacrificing everything, it is necessary to defeat the inhuman, unjust enemy.
Thirdly, patriotism is expressed in the spirit of unity, encouraging comrades to unite in fighting the enemy to save the country. The sincere words are deeply moving about the king-subject relationship:
'You have long been under my command, holding military power, if you have no clothes, I give you mine; if you have no food, I give you mine. If you are low-ranking, I promote you; if you have little luck, I provide for you. If you go by water, I give you a boat; if you go on foot, I give you a horse. In the battlefield, we live and die together; in times of leisure, we laugh together.'
These are also words of profound understanding and strict but insightful criticism from him when he sees his talented generals neglecting their duties for personal gain. Tran Quoc Tuấn pointed out the remaining shortcomings of his soldiers: their indifference to the people's suffering, their indifference to the enemy's sword threatening the homeland. The country is in danger 'hanging by a hair' but they still crave ordinary pleasures, unworthy: 'Some find joy in cockfighting; some find pleasure in gambling. Some take care of their gardens to support their families; some are attached to their wives and children to satisfy their own desires. Some plan for their livelihood but forget about the country; some are keen on hunting but neglect military affairs. Some like good wine; some are obsessed with nonsense.' Therefore, Tran Quoc Tuấn urged and encouraged the generals to take action, to elevate the fighting spirit, the spirit of courageous resilience, to be highly vigilant, to take care of training the military, to be willing to die honorably rather than live in shame under the enemy's rule.
'Today we select and compile the military strategies of various houses into a collection, called the Essentials of Military Science. If you know how to study this book according to my teaching, then you will be a god for life; if you despise this book, contrary to my teaching, then you will be an enemy for life.'
The essay clearly demonstrates the patriotism of a talented general. It urges in the hearts of each of us, the future generations, the awareness of national independence, protection of sovereignty and territory. Trần Quốc Tuấn is like a shining example of patriotism, teaching everyone pride, consciousness, and civic responsibility, ready to stand up when the country faces invasion and cherish the current peace of the nation.
