Android 14 will feature satellite connectivity capability

T-Mobile and SpaceX have recently announced a partnership that could reshape the future of mobile connectivity by providing satellite-based connections in areas currently lacking access to mobile services. Although the service is expected to launch by late 2023, it seems like Google's Android operating system will be ready to support it when it's up and running.

Android's Senior Vice President, Hiroshi Lockheimer, shared on Twitter that Google is “designing Android for satellite,” and the company is excited to support partners “in activating all of this in the next version of Android.” Lockheimer, also one of the founding members of the Android team, reminisced about the challenges of integrating Wi-Fi and 3G into the first Android phone, the T-Mobile G1, in 2008. Since then, there have been significant hardware and software advancements year after year.

During the T-Mobile and SpaceX event, T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert declared the intention to “eliminate dead zones on mobile devices.” T-Mobile announced a collaboration with SpaceX to launch satellites enabling connectivity in rural areas without mobile coverage. The initial service will support messaging, MMS, and select messaging apps, then expand to include voice calls and wireless internet. It's uncertain if other carriers or companies will join this satellite movement, but Google's commitment to this technology is a fantastic step towards its widespread adoption in the future.
