Recently uncovered by XDA Developers, the latest Android 11 Developer Preview includes references to enabling Live Caption for phone calls, with the update potentially replacing the final version of the operating system.
Android's Live Caption feature could soon be operational during phone calls
Essentially, the Live Caption feature presents subtitles on video and audio files in real-time whenever speech is detected. It utilizes Google's AI to display on-screen what is being said - perfect for individuals with hearing difficulties or those trapped in quiet environments.
If this feature is also rolled out for phone calls, you'll be able to see what the person on the other end is saying, even if you can't hear them. Google's language recognition tools function quite effectively, so you'll receive accurate transcriptions. So when will Live Caption arrive for phone calls?
Enabling Live Caption during calls means that the conversation's spoken content will need to be monitored. Based on code in Android 11, the caller on the other end will receive a notification that Live Caption has been activated.
This is a technology that Google is highly interested in: the Recorder app on newer Pixel phones can transcribe spoken audio from lectures, interviews, etc., while it appears that the Google Phone app will soon be able to record calls as well.
As usual, although these features are present in preview and beta versions for developers, it doesn't necessarily mean Live Caption will definitely appear on the final version of Android 11.
Google has not yet set an official release date for the mobile operating system update, although users are hoping it will be launched around August or September, possibly on Pixel phones first. In the meantime, explore the public beta test that anyone can join.
