Love them or hate them, emoticons are widely used to express various emotions. Now, according to a report, Google could be aiming to eliminate the reliance on these Android system updates.
Android users can access new emoticons in the upcoming version without updating.
Google has made commitments to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) to achieve this goal. Currently, all fonts and emoticons are stored in a read-only system partition.
New commitments on Gerrit indicate that Google will allow the 'system_server' process to read and write to the system directory, essentially meaning the company could deploy support for new emoticons faster than before.
It's important to note that these commitments have yet to be merged, so there's no guarantee this change will happen. However, if they are merged, we might see this change with Android 12, expected to bring at least 217 new emoticons with Emoji 13.1 in 2021.
Another exciting piece of news for Android users is that in 2021, they may be able to run Android games and apps directly on the latest Windows 10 operating system.
