Users alarmed as App Store discovers malicious app (Image: Gizchina)A malicious app from a Chinese developer has been removed from macOS App Store by Apple. The first person to discover suspicious activity in this app was Alex Kleber, a cybersecurity researcher. Interestingly, this developer still has several other harmful apps available.
Apple then initiated an investigation, revealing that this Chinese developer had up to 7 developer accounts on macOS App Store under different names. All 7 accounts had apps containing malware, and all of them passed through the review process, lurking on the App Store waiting for users to download.

In response to an interview, Apple stated that this app hid malware within programming commands, which remained inactive during the review but activated once the app passed through scrutiny.
This malware was also controlled through third-party servers like Cloudflare and GoDaddy, which allow their customers to conceal their identities, making it even more challenging for Apple to track down.
