I. COMPREHENSION
Question 1. The poem is written in free verse.
Question 2. The poem mentions the natural resources of the country: minerals in the mountains, treasures beneath the continental shelves, primeval forests, and silt from the rivers.
Question 3. Identify the interrogative sentence used in the excerpt:
+ How do you perceive the earth today?
+ Why is rich land poor in appearance?
- State the purpose of interrogative sentences: To evoke pride in the richness of our country's nature and to instill a sense of responsibility in each of us in utilizing and developing the nation's potential to eradicate poverty, to build a prosperous life, and to advance the nation.
Question 4. Students are to elucidate the author's viewpoint as expressed in two verses and state their personal opinion on the matter. Answers should be concise, clearly articulating personal perspectives, with persuasive reasoning.
- Explain the author's viewpoint: Our country, although rich in resources, possesses a formidable and precious potential for national development. However, if we fail to harness it and merely sing praises, boasting without taking action, without awakening these potentials, they will remain dormant, unable to aid in the nation's progress and the improvement of people's lives.
- State personal opinion: I agree with the above opinion (explain reasons)
Additional note: Over the years of war and human negligence, our country's resources have been depleted significantly, no longer resembling the 'golden forests and silver seas'. Hence, it's imperative to cherish and responsibly exploit resources, protect the environment, and ensure sustainable development.
II. WRITING TASK
Question 1.
* Format requirements:
- Argumentative paragraph approximately 200 words
- Clearly explain the issue for debate, present tight arguments, persuade convincingly, and provide appropriate evidence.
* Content requirements:
Students are expected to express their own views on the issue, but must do so succinctly, coherently, and persuasively. They can develop their writing with the following main points:
- Elaborate on the issue:
+ What is the 'national potential': It encompasses both natural potential and human potential (tradition, history, culture, intellect, physical attributes...).
+ What is the mission of awakening the national potential: It is the responsibility of each individual to contribute to awakening and maximizing the nation's potential.
- Thus affirming, the mission of each individual is to contribute to awakening the potential and strength of the nation to further its development.
+ New potentials are merely in latent form, yet to be realized, yet to directly contribute to development. Therefore, we must know how to awaken these potentials.
+ How to awaken the country's potentials: Firstly, we must thoroughly understand our potentials, strengths in terms of nature, and human resources in the context of current integration and development. From there, specific solutions and actions can be devised to exploit and utilize the country's potentials effectively.
+ Awakening the country's potentials is the common mission of every Vietnamese patriot.
- Further discussion:
+ Many of the country's resources are being depleted without yielding high, stable, and long-term economic benefits. Meanwhile, other national strengths, especially human resources, intellectual assets of the Vietnamese people, are being wasted, are 'bleeding out'.
+ In the current context, human potential and resources are the main sources of strength for national development.
- Lessons in awareness and action: knowing how to use resources efficiently, exploiting valuable resources for sustainable development, while each individual needs to strive in learning and training to contribute to the country.
Question 2.
1. Format requirements:
- Ensure the structure of the argumentative essay: Begin with an introduction to the issue, develop the body to address the problem, and conclude by summarizing the issue.
- Ensure Vietnamese spelling, semantics, and grammar.
2. Content requirements:
a. Correctly identify the issue for debate: the contrast between the beauty of the boat outside the distant and the violence in the fishing village family (from the story 'The Boat Outside the Distant' by Nguyen Minh Chau) and its connection with the contrast between the district city scene late at night and the image of the train (from the story 'Two Children' by Thach Lam).
b. Developing the issue
* Introduction
- Introduce the author Nguyen Minh Chau, the work 'The Boat Outside the Distant.'
- Introduce the contrast between the beauty of the boat outside the distant and the violence in the fishing village family, linking it with the contrast between the district city scene late at night and the image of the train (from the story 'Two Children' by Thach Lam) to illustrate the two authors' perspectives on reality.
* Body
- The contrast between the beauty of the boat outside the distant and the violence in the fishing village family:
+ The beauty of the boat outside the distant - a magnificent beauty, a 'priceless scene': the boat's bow etched a blurry line into the white misty air like milk slightly tinged with pink from the sun's rays, a simple, whole beauty that deeply moved and infinitely delighted Phung.
+ The violence in the fishing village family: two ugly, rough people stepped out of the boat as it approached the shore; the man used his belt to relentlessly strike the woman's back, and she endured it in silence; Phac - the son, rushed to grab the belt and defend his mother, only to receive two slaps from the man; the mother held her child and wept.
=> This is the contrast between beauty and ugliness, between good and evil, between the outward appearance and the inner essence of life's reality.
- The contrast between the district city scene late at night and the image of the train:
+ The district city scene late at night: darkness reigns, a solemn silence pervades the 'streets and alleys filled with darkness,' 'all dark, the road leading to the river, the road through the market back home, the alleys into the village even darker.' In this enveloping darkness, the district city residents appear diminutive, struggling, and weary in the struggle for survival.
+ The image of the train: is a completely different world filled with light 'brightly lit train cars...', sounds 'the strong sound of wheels against rails,' 'the noisy chatter of passengers...'
=> This is the contrast between darkness and light, between stillness and vibrancy, between sadness and lively joy... thereby highlighting prominently the contrast between reality and dreams, accentuating the poverty, darkness of the lives of the district city dwellers.
- Comments on the authors' perspectives on reality:
+ Similarities: Both authors have a multi-dimensional, multi-faceted perspective on reality, in the contrasting relations between beauty and ugliness, between darkness and light, to perceive the depth of the picture of life's reality. From this profound perspective, readers see the humaneness of the authors.
+ Differences:
Nguyen Minh Chau: Life's reality always harbors much complexity, behind beauty there can still be ugliness, evil. Artists should not just observe life from a distance but must be involved with life to have a profound perspective, understanding to discover hidden beauty.
Thach Lam: Faced with the harsh reality of life, people always aspire to a better, brighter life. Through that perspective, the author expresses belief in humanity: regardless of circumstances, people always have aspirations for what is good and beautiful.
* Conclusion: Affirming the value of the work as well as the talent, the heart of the author.
Although the exam was not too difficult, according to evaluations, the 2018 High School Literature exam was harder than 2017. This year's exam requires students to understand current affairs. Specifically, in the reading comprehension section, candidates need to demonstrate their knowledge of various poetic forms, understand the content of the poem, and provide their own comments on whether the poem is relevant to reality. Questions 1, 2, and 3 of Part I may earn students high marks, but they are very likely to lose points in question 4 if they lack sufficient knowledge and practical skills.
Part 2 of the 2018 High School Literature exam requires students to discuss their thoughts on the poem 'Awakening Potential,' as well as address issues present in the short stories 'Two Children' by Thach Lam and 'The Boat Beyond Far.' This came as a shock to many students because in previous years, the Literature exam also required analysis of 'The Boat Beyond Far,' so many students did not focus on reviewing this poem. However, if students grasp the issues in the poem well, they can still answer the questions according to the answer key for the 2018 National High School Literature exam provided by the Ministry of Education and Training.
The answer key for the 2018 National High School Literature exam presents clear, comprehensive ideas, which students can refer to and use to grade their own exams.
