The updates for iOS 16 and macOS 13 Ventura from Apple are expected to be released to all users by the end of this year, likely in September alongside the new iPhone 14 models. Interestingly, besides the previously announced features, these updates also support the AVIF format.
Apple adds AVIF image format support to Safari on iOS 16 and macOS 13 Ventura
For those unaware, AVIF (AV1 File) is a file format that allows users to compress image files without reducing the original quality as well as supporting HDR and transparency. Additionally, users can use AV1 for animations, such as GIFs.
In another aspect, AV1 is considered to be an image and video file format set to launch in the future due to its more efficient format compared to other standard file formats currently available such as HEVC or H.265 - the predecessors of AV1.

iOS 16 and macOS 13 Ventura are currently in the testing phase and will be rolled out to all users this autumn alongside the iPhone 14 models and Apple Watch Series 8 devices.
