Apple commits to using 100% recycled cobalt in battery production by 2025

Apple recently announced that by 2025, all the batteries they use in their devices will be made with recycled cobalt, along with magnets also using recycled rare earth elements. Following this, the mainboards will also be 100% recycled tin.

Apple stated that in 2021, 13% of the total cobalt found in Apple products was recycled cobalt, and by 2022, it had increased to 25%. Similarly, the percentage of recycled rare earth elements in 2021 was 45%, and by 2022, it was 73%. Apple also revealed for the first time that rare earth elements are used in the Taptic Engine of the iPhone 11.

Furthermore, tin used on Apple's circuit boards in their devices is gradually transitioning to recycled tin, with the percentage increasing, reaching 38% in 2022. Since the iPhone 13, Apple has been pioneering the creation of an exclusive recycled gold supply chain for use in plating their circuit boards. This supply chain has since been expanded to include AirPods Pro, Apple Watch, and the production of the iPhone 14's camera components.
