Skype is one of the most popular VoIP calling apps, allowing users to make internet voice calls and send messages to distant friends and relatives. However, it seems that China doesn't want its citizens using messaging and calling apps from other countries, especially the U.S. Before Apple was compelled to remove Microsoft's Skype app from the App Store in China, WhatsApp was also completely blocked in the world's most populous country not long ago.

The Chinese government prohibits apps and services from using end-to-end encryption for communication, or if these apps fail to comply with the country's surveillance and user identification regulations. This is also the reason why Skype was removed from the App Store in China
Apple was forced to remove Microsoft's Skype app from the App Store in China
An Apple spokesperson stated: 'We have been informed by the Ministry of Public Security that some VoIP apps do not comply with national laws. Therefore, these apps must be removed from the App Store in China'. 'These apps are still available on all other markets'.
Skype is not entirely banned in China
Skype is not completely banned in China; the app continues to be used domestically. There are signs that Microsoft is negotiating with Chinese authorities to restore the app as soon as possible. If Microsoft fails, Skype will soon join the ranks of banned apps in China, including WhatsApp, Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter, Telegram, and Gmail.
The Chinese government has banned the use of all the aforementioned services, restricting access to similar messaging services. Recently, the Chinese government also banned the sale of the latest Apple Watch Series 3 LTE in the country due to security concerns.
There is a high likelihood that Apple will be forced to remove Skype from the App Store in China as well as other app stores where users can download apps. If this becomes a reality, users will only be able to use Skype on the web to message and chat with their contacts in China.
In many cases, users encounter issues logging in to Skype for chat or conversation, not because Skype is banned but due to connectivity or other reasons. You can refer to the troubleshooting methods we introduced earlier to fix Skype login issues for the best solutions.
