Apple has integrated numerous accessibility features to enhance mobile device usability. Recently, the Cupertino giant has added convenient support features and tools such as emergency sound recognition, advanced magnifying glass tool, and excellent voice-controlled functionality on iOS 14. Now, to aid individuals with speech sound disorders, Apple has launched a new feature called 'Saylists' on Apple Music.
According to a BBC report, 1 out of every 12 children in the UK suffers from a speech sound disorder (SSD). Consequently, Apple has collaborated with Warner Music to develop the Saylists feature, which will utilize algorithms to identify songs and phrases that may pose challenges for children affected by SSD.
Currently, Saylists offer users songs with repeating sounds like 'ch...', 'g...', 'k...', 'z...', and more. The aim is to encourage individuals with SSD to repeat challenging sounds. This is one of the most successful methods for treating speech sound disorders.
The algorithm developed by Apple and Warner Music scans 70 million songs on Apple Music to find useful songs for users with SSD. As of now, the algorithm has selected 173 such songs, including Good as Hell and Right There by Lizzo, Don't Start Now by Dua Lipa, and Right Now by Fatboy Slim.
On Apple Music, searching for Saylists will yield a playlist specifically designed for speech sounds. For example: a speech playlist for Z sounds, T sounds, S sounds, and many similar playlists. Prominent artists on these Saylists include Dj Tiesto, Tones And I, Rihanna, Michael Jackson, Jack Black, and many others.
