Apple has been testing iOS 13.4.5 with developers since March 31st, and with beta version 3, it evolved into iOS 13.5. Following the provision of the GM Seed version earlier this week, the update is now officially released.
The version number change is due to the inclusion of the new Exposure Notification API feature, used for tracking Covid-19. An update like iOS 13.4.5 would still use the iOS 13.4 SDK, but with the new API, a new SDK is needed. Hence, it has been rebranded as iOS 13.5.
Apple releases iOS 13.5 with Covid-19 tracing feature.
The iOS 13.5 update introduces the Exposure Notification API feature developed by Apple and Google, designed to enable public health authorities to create COVID-19 exposure tracking apps with the aim of slowing the virus spread. Another new feature is FaceID becoming slightly more user-friendly when wearing a mask. Though it doesn't work exactly as you might expect, it helps make the experience less time-consuming. Typically, your iPhone would attempt to recognize your face for a few seconds before failing and displaying the PIN screen. Now, you simply won't have to wait those few seconds anymore.
Finally, current users can now share songs, albums, and playlists from Apple Music to Facebook and Instagram. This is the only feature listed that was expected to appear in iOS 13.4.5 before all COVID-related features emerged.
Next up seems to be iOS 14, iPadOS 14, watchOS 7, macOS 10.16, and tvOS 14. Apple will unveil these major updates at WWDC, expected to kick off on June 22nd.
