According to ExpressVPN, they received a letter from Apple on Saturday informing them that their iOS app had been removed. The letter cited reasons for the app's removal: 'The app contains content that is illegal in China, which does not comply with the App Store Review Guidelines.' On a blog, ExpressVPN stated that initial research indicated that 'all VPN apps primarily for iOS have been removed.' In a Tweet on Saturday, Star VPN announced that they had received a notification from Apple.
Responding to inquiries from Apple earlier this year, China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) announced that all VPN providers must obtain government licenses. MIIT has implemented regulations on the Internet and the wireless industry.
According to Apple:'We have been required to remove some VPN apps that do not comply with the new regulations in China. These apps are still available in all other markets where they are present.'
Using VPNs is one way for users in China to access news websites and social media platforms banned by the Chinese government, such as The New York Times, Twitter, and Facebook.
Earlier this month, China ordered three state-owned wireless network operators to block users from accessing VPNs starting February 1, 2018. Therefore, Apple's removal of VPN apps from the App Store in China is not surprising.
