According to Apple, iOS 12 will enhance the app launch speed on devices like the iPhone 6 Plus, released in 2014, with apps launching up to 60% faster. Craig Federighi also added that the keyboard speed on older devices will be 50% faster, and the camera's capture capability will be 70% quicker. Ultimately, performance can be improved up to 2X, depending on the device.
In addition, Apple announced new AR features, such as the new file format - USDZ, developed in collaboration with Pixar. Apple mentioned that they are working with partners to support USDZ in non-Apple apps. Adobe stated that they will soon integrate this new feature into their products like Creative Cloud.
Federighi also introduced new features allowing users to measure objects in AR. Along with this, users can save 3D objects with USDZ and bring them into the real world.
Next up is the ARKit 2 platform, enriched with new improvements such as enhanced facial tracking and shared experiences. This means that now, a group of users can play games together in the same AR world.
The company is also rolling out enhancements for Photos, including improved search capabilities. Users can now search for images based on events, keywords, and more.
The new Tab For You displays image features and other elements that iOS wants to highlight for users, providing sharing suggestions based on the people present in the photos. After users share photos with friends and family, iOS will check the friends' library and suggest photo shares.
Regarding the virtual assistant Siri, Apple will introduce additional shortcuts. Apps will have an additional Add to Siri button, allowing users to program phrases for activation. Additionally, there's a new Shortcut app, enabling users to manage all shortcuts. Users can also use shortcuts to automate tasks. Refer to how to Enable Siri on iPhone here.
Apple also mentioned redesigning stock-related apps, including the Stocks and Voice Memos apps, for integration into iPad. iBooks is also getting a facelift and will be renamed Books.
Lastly, Apple is revisiting the Do Not Disturb feature. Users can easily sink into sleep without being disturbed by ringing alarms and a barrage of notifications with the Do Not Disturb During Bedtime feature.
iOS 12 will consolidate notifications. Users can swipe through all grouped notifications at once.
According to earlier reports, users can view an overview of their iPhone usage. With the new app, you can set specific time limits for using particular apps.
Of course, we can't overlook the new Animojis and Memojis, features similar to AR Emoji on the Samsung Galaxy S9. And finally, FaceTime will support group video calls. Check out details on how to use Facetime here.
