In 1564, France decided to switch from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar, as decreed by Pope Gregory XIII. Consequently, New Year's Day shifted from the last week of March to January 1st.
However, with limited means of communication at the time, some rural French people continued to celebrate New Year's Day based on the old calendar.
Those who persisted in celebrating New Year's Day on April 1st were dubbed as 'fools' and became a source of amusement for others. Hence, April 1st earned the moniker 'April Fools' Day'.
