Familiar faces quietly filled the desks in the classroom. Most of the children seemed bewildered as to why there were teachers of all ages today, but they remained silent. Contrary to usual days, they sat quietly and solemnly, as if expecting an exam. Yet, I noticed Phrăng was missing. This student... I decided to delay the start of the class to wait for this peculiar student.
Phrăng arrived, timidly lingering behind the door. On any other day, I might have reprimanded him and called him to the board for a quiz. But today, I simply reminded him gently:
- Phrăng, please take your seat quickly so we can begin our lesson.
After decades in this profession, I've never found it so difficult to begin a lesson. Yet, I eventually had to deliver the painful news that this would be my final class teaching French literature to these young minds.
The children, initially bewildered, suddenly understood, perhaps from overhearing snippets of the news read by adults yesterday. They remained silent.
The class proceeded as usual. I taught the children the finer points of grammar rules regarding participles, but it seemed I was not getting through to them. Even when I called upon Phrăng, the habitual truant, for a quiz, it wasn't to test the boy. Rather, my lesson morphed into a discourse, mourning for the French language. In essence, it was an assertion that the decision made by the Germans was truly heinous and cruel.
Then the lesson concluded. I had the children practice writing. That day, I had them repeatedly write two lines neatly: French, German; German, French. While the children diligently wrote, I heard my younger sister bustling about, packing. The atmosphere made me shrink further into my chair, fingers tracing the smooth white chalk. I wonder how tomorrow will be, leaving behind the cherished objects that have been with me for decades.
A sharp pain pierced my left chest, my vision and head spun, numbness and exhaustion enveloped me. I stood up, but my legs felt weak. I staggered and nearly fell if it weren't for the edge of the table to steady myself. The church clock just struck twelve, and it was infuriating to hear the Prussian soldiers swaggering outside. I wanted to say something, anything to everyone and my beloved students. But I couldn't find the words. I turned back to the board. Silent, I picked up a piece of chalk and exerted all my strength to write in large letters:
Long live France for eternity!
