Task: Assume the persona of the Old Man, the Goldfish, or the Wife and retell the story of the Old Man and the Golden Fish.
Response:
Once upon a time in a faraway land, there lived a small golden fish. It found itself tangled in the net of an old farmer. Looking at the farmer with pleading eyes, it said, 'Kind sir, please release me back into the vast sea. I promise to repay your kindness.' The farmer, astonished to hear the fish speak, chuckled and said, 'Go on home, little one. I need nothing in return.' Grateful, the fish swam back to the ocean, never forgetting the farmer's generosity.
Filled with joy, the fish thanked the kind farmer and swam swiftly back to the sea. Not long after, while swimming amidst coral reefs, it heard the farmer calling its name. Curious, it approached and asked what was wrong. The farmer shared the story of his wife's demand for a new pig trough, threatening unrest if he failed. Seeing the farmer's worry, the fish assured, 'Go home, I'll ensure your wife gets a new pig trough. It's a simple matter.' With that, the farmer returned, and the fish dove back into the ocean to frolic with its friends.
Perhaps from the start, I should have only granted the farmer a new pig trough instead of fulfilling his wife's escalating demands. I let things return to their original state. The farmer's wife returned to being a poor farmer's wife by a cracked pig trough.
