Ariel, the mermaid, makes her appearance in the latest teaser, but fails to win the audience's hearts.
Disappointing fans by being absent from the grand trailer showcase at the Super Bowl, Disney's The Little Mermaid compensates with a new teaser, revealing more images of the red-haired mermaid protagonist.
New teaser of The Little Mermaid 2023.
In the latest teaser of The Little Mermaid, viewers can get a clearer glimpse of the underwater kingdom, the mermaid races, and especially the 'head-to-tail' portrayal of the female lead, Ariel. However, these new images still fail to leave a positive impression on the audience, and instead, they intensify the feeling of annoyance.

Many netizens maintain the viewpoint that Halle Bailey doesn't fit the role of the mermaid Ariel. Beyond the skin color issue, Ariel in this live-action version completely 'shatters' the iconic depiction based on the beloved 1989 animated version. Disney itself introduced this 2023 project following the animated version rather than Andersen's original tale, further disappointing the audience.
Viewers' comments:
- Does the mermaid Ariel look innocent at all?
- Have to max out the screen brightness just to see, the movie's too dark!
- Cute but not my Ariel.
- Now I'm starting to believe in the story of the mermaid using her singing to lure humans and then devouring them.
- Looks like a servant next to the prince... But in reality, the prince is also too 'over the top'.
Notably, this new teaser has officially teased the appearance of Prince Eric (played by Jonah Hauer-King) and the antagonist Ursula (played by Melissa McCarthy). Their romantic scene together has been deemed quite 'off,' with Ariel even resembling the prince's servant.

Up to now, the singing voice remains the only highlight for Ariel and Halle Bailey. Even the performance of the 2000-born star is a big 'question mark.' In a playful scene with the talking fish, her exaggerated lip movements fail to impress the viewers.

Finally, the dark and hard-to-watch color scheme of The Little Mermaid 2023 is another aspect criticized by the audience. Opting for the path of eccentricity and noise, can Disney succeed with its latest take on this Disney princess?
