Bangkok, known as a tourist paradise, also conceals numerous scams and pitfalls.
With limited travel time, everyone hopes to hop on a tuk-tuk and head straight to their destination or be dropped off at their hotel after sightseeing. However, Thai tuk-tuk drivers are often cunning.
They may claim to be supported by the government to take you to shopping centers, jewelry shops, souvenir stores before reaching your destination. If you make a purchase, they get a percentage. Even if you buy nothing, they still receive a smaller commission for bringing you there. Some tuk-tuk drivers at night may even take you straight to nightclubs and refuse to take you home.
The best way to avoid this scam is to use taxis, public transportation, or only take tuk-tuks during the day.
2. The Tourist Trap of Khao San Road
Khao San Road is a bustling street well-known to backpackers, yet it hides numerous scams. Here, you may easily end up buying worthless items or paying much more than they're worth. Typical traps include gemstones, designer fashion, and electronics.
The best way to avoid these traps is to refrain from purchasing anything you don't fully understand; ask fellow travelers about the prices of items and take a stroll to compare prices before making a purchase.
Scams at famous landmarks
Even when you've reached popular tourist spots like Wat Pho temple, the Grand Palace, or Khao San Road, you could still fall victim to deception.
You might encounter fake tour guides or seemingly authentic staff claiming that the site is closed, enticing you to visit another destination. Some scammers even set up fake ticket booths right next to the real ones to deceive tourists.
Some fraudsters are willing to pick you up outside famous landmarks to take you to other shopping areas, falsely claiming that the ride is completely free.
So, if you don't want to be scammed, never hop on a tuk-tuk right away, especially if it's free. Always check online for opening hours and ticketing information for famous landmarks before visiting.
Living with locals
Staying with local residents is an ideal way to explore and learn about their daily lives. However, you should thoroughly research the family you plan to live with if you intend to do this in Bangkok.
Sometimes, less scrupulous families might invite you to gamble for money, while others may charge exorbitant fees for meals or add addictive substances to food and drinks.
