In the land of Croneus, King Athamas and his first wife Nephele (the goddess of clouds) bore a daughter named Helle and a son named Phrius after a period of cohabitation.
Next, King Athamas took a second wife, Ino (daughter of the King of Thebes – Cadmus), and they had 2 children. In order to secure the inheritance for her own children, Ino schemed to harm the offspring of Nephele early on.
Ino falsely accused the workers of the land (the main food source in the region of Croneus) of their crops failing to sprout. Simultaneously, she bribed a renowned oracle sent by King Athamas to inquire with the gods about the mysterious phenomenon.
The narrative then unfolds to depict the destructive nature of the crop failure attributed to the two children of Nephele. To remedy the situation, King Athamas had to offer them as sacrifices to the gods. Despite the heartbreak, he resolved to carry out the grim task.
Fortunately, prior to these events, the god Zeus had gifted Nephele a ram with fleece of golden wool (known as Aries). On the day of the sacrificial ritual, Helle & Phrius were spirited away by the ram, crossing a vast azure ocean to escape their fate.
Unfortunately, Helle met her demise, falling into and perishing in the Hellespont Sea. Meanwhile, Phrius found himself stranded in the kingdom of Colchis, where the benevolent king and queen adopted him and later arranged his marriage to a princess.
Grateful for the divine assistance from Zeus, Phrius decided to perform a ritual with the ram and placed it in a special location as a token of gratitude. As for the god Zeus, Aries was left in the sky, praised for its courageous spirit.
In time, the golden fleece of the ram became one of the cherished treasures of the Colchian dynasty. Moreover, this artifact became the focal point of the arduous quest undertaken by the explorer Jason, costing him a great deal of time and effort.
