Bang La Salt Apples from Hai Phong: 'Sweet as sugar, cool as salt'
Apples are one of the main crops in Bang La Ward, Do Son District. This area used to be salt fields, and despite the hard work under the sun, people couldn't make ends meet. That's why for over 10 years, locals have switched to growing apples, tomatoes, and raising livestock.

Bang La Salt Apples thrive and produce high-quality fruits in the salty soil. The apples have a sweet, slightly sour, crisp, and juicy taste, superior to many other apple varieties, making them highly favored and renowned here.

Apple trees here bear abundant fruit, with each tree capable of yielding up to 100kg of apples per harvest. An apple orchard can fetch several million dong per hectare, more than 10 times the value of growing rice, so apple orchards can be found everywhere in Bang La, from the upper villages to the lower hamlets.

In September, apple trees bloom, and shortly after, they begin to bear fruit. The apple harvesting season lasts from October to January of the lunar calendar. Due to coinciding with Tet holiday, the demand for consumption is very high. People in Hai Phong eagerly seek out Bang La Salt Apples to eat and give as gifts every Tet holiday.

On social media platforms, Bang La apples have also become a commodity traded in large quantities. Some sellers even livestream directly from the apple orchards to sell their products. As Tet approaches, apples sell even faster and at higher prices.

Bang La Salt Apples are described as 'sweet as desert sands, cool as mineral springs', especially since they are entirely free from any artificial stimulants. Many families use water from fish ponds for daily irrigation without much need for additional care. Once the apples start to bear fruit, orchard owners utilize traps, insect stickers, and hire pest control services to prevent damage from insects.

Tourists visiting Hai Phong at the end of the year enjoy sampling the characteristic dishes of the port city. Not only that, they also visit the apple orchards in Bang La to explore, taste ripe apples straight from the trees, and purchase this special fruit as gifts.
