BMW Motorrad has recently unveiled the world's first facial and eye recognition system on motorcycles, aiming to provide utmost convenience and enhance theft prevention. This system, named iFace by BMW Motorrad, serves as a perfect complement to the existing Keyless Go technology, eliminating the need for physical keys to unlock the bike.
iFace by BMW Motorrad is developed through collaboration with Professor Gerhard Lesjöh, the head of the ophthalmology department at the University of Munich. This system offers the capability to recognize the rider's face and also compares the iris and pupil of the eye for precise identification. This facial recognition system utilizes the latest 3D technology integrated into the motorcycle's TFT display, invisible from the outside. It is done through stripe projection method, a technology used for many years. After removing the helmet, the face is biometrically scanned in three dimensions. This 3D image is then compared to a data record stored in the system. If it matches your face, the system unlocks the bike's neck and starts the engine. Because 3D scanning works with infrared scanning, this type of facial recognition also operates in darkness.
We don't always have the same face while riding, and BMW iFace understands that. This system scans the iris and pupil to ensure you're the bike owner, even when wearing a helmet. The system's scanner has a polarizing filter that looks through helmet visors, eyeglasses, or contact lenses. All you need to do is let iFace know whether you want to scan the face or the eyes. There are three eye scan options: tinted lenses, clear lenses, and open lenses. If someone steals the bike, iFace will send an emergency message to the eCall service and the BMW Motorrad Call Center. Furthermore, to help identify the thief, scan data and current geographical location are sent to the international law enforcement database of the federal police for identification. If the scan data matches the center's data, the search for the thief can be initiated immediately. If not, the data will be stored for later use.BMW iFace is set to debut near the end of this year on models with boxer engines, specifically which models BMW Motorrad has not yet announced.According to biker.vn
