The latest generation of BMW's 4-Series Convertible has been formally presented by the German luxury car manufacturer, marking the unveiling of the soft-top variant 35 years after the debut of the first convertible model.
The key difference in this new generation of BMW 4-Series Convertible and its predecessor lies in the fact that the 2021 version features only a soft top, whereas the previous generation had a retractable hardtop. BMW states that this new soft-top design contributes to reducing the vehicle's weight, increasing trunk space, and lowering the center of gravity for improved handling.
Similar to the latest BMW 4-Series, the 2021 Convertible version boasts larger dimensions compared to its predecessor. In fact, it's 132mm longer, 25mm wider, and 2.5mm taller. Its wheelbase is also extended by 40mm, with the front track widened by an additional 38mm.
In the United States, the 2021 BMW 4-Series Convertible will be available with a range of engines similar to the Coupe variant. The lineup begins with the 430i and 430i xDrive models, featuring a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine producing a maximum power of 255 horsepower from 5,000 - 6,500 rpm and a peak torque of 400Nm at 1,550 - 4,400 rpm.
The higher-tier variants, M440i and M440i xDrive, utilize a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 engine, delivering a maximum power of 382 horsepower and a torque of 500Nm at 1,800 - 5,000 rpm. All models come equipped with an 8-speed automatic transmission, and the M440i variants also feature a rear-wheel-drive M Sport differential.
