BMW recalls 83 iX and i4 vehicles due to battery fire risk.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued a warning to owners of BMW electric vehicles including the iX xDrive 50, iX M60, i4 eDrive40, and i4 M50, advising against driving, charging, or even parking these vehicles indoors or in a garage. This warning comes as a result of potential battery fire risks associated with these models. BMW has issued a recall affecting a total of 83 affected vehicles.

Following the first reported incident involving a 2022 i4 eDrive in April, BMW initiated an investigation which revealed defects in Samsung SDI battery cells installed in iX models manufactured between December 2, 2021, and June 30, 2022, and i4 models produced between November 22, 2021, and June 13, 2022. BMW has informed dealerships and will replace the batteries free of charge for affected customers. BMW stated that they have not recorded any casualties or accidents related to the aforementioned issue.

Currently, BMW sources batteries for its vehicles from two suppliers: Samsung SDI and CATL. Therefore, any issues arising with batteries from one manufacturer will not affect the others.
