Implementing Mac OS speed-up measures will make your MacBook, iMac, or any device using the Mac OS operating system faster, thereby making work more efficient and smoother.
Ways to speed up macOS
1. Clean up your hard drive
After a while of usage, downloading and storing hundreds, even tens of applications, data, and visible junk files, your Mac's hard drive space is getting scarce.
Your device needs more free space to function properly. Go to About this Mac =>More Info =>Storage to see how many GB of free space you have and check which files are occupying the most space. Alternatively, you can use the Disk Inventory X utility for this purpose. Find out what's hogging up the most space on your hard drive, whether it's images, music, downloaded movies, or installed applications.
If the images you store on your Mac are the culprit, consider transferring older photos to a USB drive or burning them onto a disc.
Furthermore, you can access and tidy up iPhoto's trash. Deleting some photos from iPhoto doesn't mean they're completely gone. iPhoto has its own trash bin where it stores deleted photos. Therefore, you can access and clean up these photos to free up additional hard drive space.
Finally, go to About this Mac =>Overview, and you'll see the Software Update button, click on it to check for updates.
2. Monitor Activities
To quickly 'diagnose' issues on your Mac, you can use Apple's Activity Monitor app. To launch the app, go to Applications =>Utilities =>Activity Monitor.
If you're unsure how to use Activity Monitor, you can refer to Apple's guide. Essentially, Activity Monitor displays apps and processes running in the background, showing how much memory each app is using, enabling you to control their activities.
In the Activity Monitor window, click the % CPU tab once or twice to sort the list in descending order. If you find any app or program using over 90% CPU, click Quit Process to close it immediately.
You may also consider adding the Activity Monitor icon to the dock for easy monitoring of activities at all times. To add the Activity Monitor icon to the dock, click and hold the icon, then select Show CPU Usage under Dock Icon.
Next, click the Disk Usage tab at the bottom of the Activity Monitor window. If the free space (indicated by green) is low, you'll need to delete many photos and videos from your hard drive to free up space, speeding up macOS.
3. Reduce Startup Apps
To speed up the Mac boot process, go to System Preferences =>Users & Groups =>Login Items. Here you'll see a list of apps that start with the system. If you don't want these programs to start with the system and to speed up the Mac boot process, simply uncheck these apps.
The next step is to clean up your Mac desktop. If your Mac desktop is cluttered with hundreds of app icons, it's best to clean up those icons to make the screen clearer and to speed up the Mac.
If you're new to Mac, make sure you know how to properly close programs and apps. When you exit apps or browsers on Mac the usual way, these apps still run in the background.
For complex and heavy apps like Photoshop, this can be a reason for Mac slowing down. To completely quit these apps, access the dock and find those apps, right-click and then choose Quit.
4. Disable Unnecessary Features
Apple uses various languages on Mac, including many that users never use. Storing multiple languages like this also takes up a considerable amount of space. Therefore, to free up space and remove unused files, you can rely on an app called Monolingual.
You can download and install Monolingual here: Download Monolingual For Mac
The Genie effect is used to minimize Apple's windows. However, this effect is unnecessary. Removing this effect helps open windows faster. Go to System Preferences =>Dock and change the Minimize windows using option from the Genie effect to the Scale effect, uncheck the box Animate opening applications. Disabling these effects will help you speed up macOS and work more efficiently.
To make your Mac run faster, you should also regularly clean up, delete browsing history on your Mac, using appropriate tools you will make your web browser run faster, reduce lag, and load slower than before.
