Boox Palma in Hand: An E-Reader with a Smartphone Design
Buzz
Palma is Boox's latest e-reader, notable for its black-and-white E Ink display but housed within a candy bar-shaped design reminiscent of smartphones. As a result, users have an excellent e-reader experience in a small, compact body that can be handled like a phone.Boox Palma isn't the first e-reader with a phone-like design; many other companies have done it to serve their target users. Overall, Palma is a compact and lightweight e-reader, weighing only about 170g, which is equivalent to the weight of an iPhone 15. I think this is a balanced size, enough for reading content and portable enough to carry around.Palma features a simple design, even with slightly sharp edges, especially noticeable when looking at and touching the back of the device. It has a rough, matte finish that resists scratches well and doesn't attract fingerprints or feel as slippery as a phone. Boox claims their product is moderately water-resistant, able to withstand light rain or splashes, though in reality, Palma lacks an IP water-resistance rating. The device overall has a sturdy build and feels very solid with a plastic back and a magnesium alloy frame. The physical buttons are also designed to provide a high durability feel, offering tactile feedback and responsiveness.Next to the iPhone 14 Pro.Palma's screen measures 6 inches by 13, utilizing an E Ink Carta 1200 panel with a resolution of 300dpi. Paired with this is a dual-tone front light (white and yellow) for reading in dim or dark environments. Palma features a light sensor for automatic brightness adjustment, eliminating the need for manual adjustments like other Boox e-readers. As for screen quality, I'd say it's exceptionally clear and vibrant. For more details, stay tuned for the review.
Boox Palma is essentially like an Android phone, just without the SIM card slot. This is a feature I think is essential rather than redundant. The device includes a memory card slot, a camera (not for taking photos, only for document scanning), Android 11 with the Play Store, microphone, and speakers for calls and music playback... You can install all Android apps here for use alongside reading: Reddit, Kindle, Facebook, News, Chrome... The Super Refresh technology allows Palma to respond quickly when users input, swipe, or turn pages, making it almost indistinguishable from a smartphone. In reality, this is an e-reader with quite a powerful configuration, featuring an octa-core Qualcomm chip, 6GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage, so it's genuinely fast.Fundamentally, this will still be an e-reader, but when needed, we can still use it for messaging, calling via Messenger, browsing Facebook, or web browsing for news... It's highly practical for those who need a portable e-reader, something they can slip into a pocket, hold comfortably in their hand, and use daily. Palma will come in two colors: black and white. The white variant still features a mirrored screen rather than a sunken display like the Leaf 2. Currently, Palma is priced at 7,590,000 VND. Customers purchasing the device from 19/9 to 26/9 will receive a complimentary insurance package for accidental damage. The screen quality is exceptionally beautiful.Palma automatically adjusts between white and yellow light based on ambient lighting.Mirrored screen, outer rubber edges for scratch protection.Button feels like a super durable phone.Suối Nguồn spans 1200 pages, and with Palma's 128GB memory, it can store many lengthy volumes like this. The back panel features a rather unique design.
