Bra Fence – Controversial Check-in Point in New Zealand
This particular Bra Fence is known as the 'Cardrona Bra Fence'. According to local folklore, this unique fence originated one morning in 1999 when a group of women celebrated New Year's Eve at the Cardrona Hotel. After leaving the bar late at night, they decided to take off their bras and hang them on the fence as a playful gesture to bid farewell to the old year and welcome the new one.

In the following weeks, the number of bras on the fence continued to grow. As news of the Bra Fence spread in 2002, more tourists flocked to the site, and they all joined in by hanging their bras on the fence.

From the initial four bras, over time, the number of bras on the fence increased to thousands, turning it into a captivating tourist attraction drawing visitors from around the globe.

Alongside its fame, the Bra Fence also causes discomfort for many and even some consider it a hazard for motorists on the road.
Over the years, the fence has undergone numerous removals; however, somehow the bras always return. In recent years, the fence has been utilized to raise funds for Breast Cancer Foundation through contributions from tourists at the charity box placed near the fence.
