In Mumbai during Ramadan, a historic street near the Minara Masjid transforms into a vibrant food market at sunset. Known as a khau galli or 'eat street,' it welcomes fasting Muslims with an array of barbecued meats and sweets. This annual festival is open to all, and local photographer Hashim Badani has captured its lively essence for Dinogo.
As Mumbai’s monsoon season hits, the weather is either drenched or sweltering. “I was drenched in one way or another,” recalls Badani about the shoot. The heat and humidity, combined with the throngs of people navigating the crowded street, make for a sweat-drenched experience. “You can’t stand still at khau galli,” Badani notes. “You enjoy the rich food, but you sweat it out before leaving.”
The street offers a bounty of meats, including chicken tikka and goat brain masala, but it’s the sweets that truly shine. During this festive period, special treats like phirni (sweet rice pudding in clay pots), deep-fried
As Badani snapped photos, vendors eagerly posed for the camera, often offering free sweets and ensuring the line of customers kept moving smoothly. Many of these sellers make a significant portion of their annual earnings during this nightly festival, Badani reveals.
The market remains bustling until sunrise, serving those who crave a late-night bite, post-work visitors, and Muslims seeking a meal before dawn prayers. During Ramadan, this khau galli attracts crowds from across the city, many of whom rarely come to this part of town. Badani finds it heartening to see Mumbai’s residents unite over food.
